Plant Science: Food Production



  • To introduce ethnobotany
  • To introduce concepts of agricultural self-sufficiency an agricultural colonialism
  • To demonstrate the economic and political agents at work in global food production 


Time Frame: 

  • Pre-learning activity materials and reflection (60 minutes)
  • Asynchronous Knowledge Construction (40 minutes)
  • Post-discussion reflection and discussion (20 minutes)


Target Audience:

  • This activity is designed for undergraduate students in an introductory multidisciplinary science Life Sciences/Natural Science/Botanical Science class


Learning Objectives:

  • Students will be able to identify the core disciplines involved in ethnobotany
  • Students will be able to define agricultural self-sufficiency, agricultural subsidies, and agricultural colonialism
  • Students will be able to identify the contentious nature of global food production
  • Students will be able to produce a simple critique of the global system of food production
