Plant Science: Mapping



  • To introduce the various mapping strategies used in plant science
  • To define key GIS (Geographical Information Systems) and mapping terminology
  • To identify the geographical regions of strategic importance for the preservation of biodiversity
  • To further identify the tools and resources used by the botanical community


Time Frame: 

  • Pre-learning questions (10 minutes)
  • Pre-learning activity materials (30 minutes)
  • Google Map creation (40 minutes)
  • Post-discussion reflection and presentation (60 minutes)


Target Audience:

  • This activity is designed for undergraduate students in an introductory multidisciplinary science Life Sciences/Natural Science/Botanical Science class


Learning Objectives:

  • Students will be able to define botany, species, genus, and specimen
  • Students will be able to identify the naming conventions used by the botanical community
  • Students will be able to identify the tools used by the botanical community
  • Students will be able to demonstrate an understanding of the location of information sources related to indigenous knowledge, botany, and patents





1. Students should answer the pre-learning questions found on the Discussion page. 

2. Students should create a Google account.

3. Students should review the pre-learning materials:

4. Students should choose one geographical area and research two particular species found there on JSTOR Plant Science. 

5. Students should create a Google Map and place markers on the map identifying those two species. Students should save the map, copy the embed code, and embed the map on the Discussion page. 

6. Students should answer the discussion questions on the Discussion page.

7. If students have additional questions, they should post those as Comments on the Discussion page.
