Plant Science: History & Background

 

Purpose:

  • To introduce the history of botany
  • To introduce the history of important botanists
  • To demonstrate the scope of botany as a pursuit
  • To demonstrate the contention of taxonomy

 

Time Frame: 

  • Pre-learning activity materials and reflection (30 minutes)
  • Asynchronous Discussion (40 minutes)
  • Post-discussion reflection and discussion (20 minutes)

 

Target Audience:

  • This activity is designed for undergraduate students in an introductory multidisciplinary science Life Sciences/Natural Science/Botanical Science class

 

Learning Objectives:

  • Students will be able to identify the trends in the history of botany
  • Students will be able to identify scientists and their achievements critical to the development of botany
  • Students will be able to demonstrate the contentious aspects of Linnaeus's taxonomy
  • Students will be able to demonstrate the influence of Linnaeus' taxonomy on Darwin's Theory of Evolution
  • Students will be able to describe the influence of class (social and economic) on the study of botany
